about
On an individual level "Sadness" is about someone wondering what else their life could have been if they had chosen differently, or given more, or tried harder, or been luckier. That nagging incessant autobiography, the constant comparison to others, living in the desert of dread for the future. They are not able to be happy with everything that they have right now in front of them - the whirlwind of anxiety that comes from living in the future, and regretting the past.
On a more global scale, the song is about the destruction of the natural world, for the sake of some idea of progress. Why did cars come to rule the world, and because of cars we needed fossil fuels, and so now here we are in this terrifying climate disaster. Maybe the song is just a really roundabout way of asking what the world could be like if no one had ever thought of an automobile?
The music video for "Sadness" is set to footage of an atomic blast test performed by the US Military in 1959. From 1945 to 1992 the US conducted over 1000 nuclear weapons tests.
Though the song was not written while thinking of ecological disaster or nuclear fallout, somehow the imagery just works perfectly with the lyrics, and hopefully allows us to ask the question, what if we hadn't done that?

lyrics
I have imagined
Stepping back in time
Before the first lie
Before the crime
Before we traded in the mountains
The mountains for the tower
Oh and yes I am thankful for the abundant life
A roaring fire, a happy wife
But just beyond the orchard trees,
The shadows are misshapen
and they're shifting every hour
And a new found nightmare of who I couldnt be
Comes rising out of the sand at the edge of the valley
A whirlwind takes over, a whirlwind grabs hold of me
Everywhere I go I leave a little sadness
Everywhere I go I leave a little sorrow
No one seems to know, no one seems to notice
Everywhere I go I leave a little sadness
Everywhere I go I leave a little sadness
Everywhere I go
A new found nightmare
I leave a little sadness
Comes rising out of the dry sand
I leave a little sorrow
At the edge of the valley
I leave a little sadness
And the whirlwind takes over me
I leave a little sorrow
